Blackface! Too funny!..... Not.
LGF had this photo up that was featured at Huffington Post: Jane Hamsher: On the Ground with Lamont/Lieberman. Oh, don't bother to go to the link. They have deleted the picture now. I guess they just didn't think that blackface might be offensive. Good Grief. Then Ace points us to an open letter to Huffington from Mark Coffey, which then prompted this justifying kind of an apology.
Update: In a case of irony that only the left can conceive of, Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson endorsed Ned Lamont today.

Cuban thoughts.
Had to share this funny on e-bay.
It is thrilling to see the Cubans get so excited over at Babalu blog. Val posted a comment that I think says it all too:
"It did my heart good to see all those people out there on Bird Road, to feel their joy and happiness along with my own. I was so proud to see my own children, born and raised in the USA take to the streets with me, dance, hold their fists in the air yelling "Libertad". Just speculation of course. How strange it must be to live in a country where no one can be sure when the leader dies.

Murtha being sued.
"A Marine Corps staff sergeant who led the squad accused of killing two dozen civilians in Haditha, Iraq, will file a lawsuit today in federal court in Washington claiming that Rep. John P. Murtha (D-Pa.) defamed him when the congressman made public comments about the incident earlier this year."
More:
"This case is not about money; it's about clearing Frank Wuterich's name, and part of that is to identify where these leaks are coming from," Zaid (attorney for Wuterich) said in an interview. "Congressman Murtha has created this atmosphere that has already concluded guilt. He's created this environment that really smells, and he's the only one who has done that."
I find this interesting. A Marine like Wuterich, who has been accused of such a heinous crime, does not file a suit to draw more attention to it unless he really believes he is innocent.

The McCain legacy.
John McCain's 18 yr old son, Jimmy, has joined the Marines (although the McCain men have been Navy) Another son Jack, who is 20, just completed his first year at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis.
I just thought that was cool enough to mention...;-)
Update: Patrick asked me in the comments why I liked McCain so much. I decided to post my answer so you guys could see too:
Honestly? Politics aside, I don't think we make men like him anymore. Men who are willing to sacrifice so much for their fellow man. He could have left the POW camp. His dad had clout and they offered. But he wouldn't leave his men. I just find that incredible. It says more about him than any issue or any mistake he has made.
Let me add one more thing. McCain and his wife adopted a black child from one of Mother Teresa's orphanges. (She actually looks Indian to me though) That is not a political move. It takes a leap of faith to adopt out of your comfort zone. I worked with adoptive parents for a while and many would not adopt anything but white. They said they just didn't want to have to deal with the questions and stares. How selfish is that???? But McCain didn't care that he was in the public eye. He didn't care about the color of her skin. He saw a child who needed a mom and a dad and he adopted her. Not because he couldn't have kids, he had kids. He just did it anyway when the easiest thing would have been to walk away. He did it anyway. This is a man I could trust as President. That's it.

I haven't blogged on this because I find it a bit distasteful to speculate on what actually caused the deaths of these children. Yes, I understand it is important to know and the only way to have that kind of investigation is to push the story, but when it comes to kids I tend to get a bit protective.
But it is time for us to know the truth. If these are staged then we can no longer trust anything that comes from those news sources. If they are not, then I would think that they would be more than happy to prove it.

Condi Slurs.
The Palestinian media gives us this:
"Al Hayat featured pictures of ralliers brandishing anti-Rice placards, some reading, “Murderer Rice go to Hell” and “Get out.” One placard had Rice drinking the blood of dead babies and stating, “I need more blood.”
A cartoon last week in the PA controlled Al Quds depicted Rice pregnant with a monkey. A caption read, “Rice speaks about birth of new Middle East.”
In a previous article by Al Hayat, Rice is described three times as the “black woman,” and her father, who was an ordained Presbyterian minister, was called the “black clergyman (who filled Rice’s head with Bible stories).” The article warned, “Beware of this ‘black spinster,’ we don’t want to say ‘the black widow’ out of respect for her femininity and her intelligence.”
Well, imagine what they would say if they didn't respect her feminity and intelligence.
I am awaiting Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton's outrage on this. Oh, and also the ones on the left who got so upset at Mel's slurs.

Adam Walsh Remembered
Anne Morse has an excellent article at NRO regarding the Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act of 2006 signed by Pres. Bush on Thursday. (You probably know John Walsh from "America's Most Wanted.")
For those of you not familiar with the story. Adam and his mother Reve' were in a department store in 1981 when Adam was 6 yrs old. Adam went to play video games on a large TV where several kids were while his mom went to the lamp department about 75 feet away. When she returned 10 minutes later, he was gone. His severed head was found 16 days later in a Florida canal. They believe he was abducted by a serial killer, Ottis Toole, who twice confessed to killing Adam only to later recant. He died in prison in 1996 of cirrhosis of the liver while serving a life sentence for other murder.
Like Anne, this story stayed with me as I had my children in the late 80's and the 90's. I was worse about it than Anne. She wouldn't let her kids out of her sight. I never took them to the stores once they were out of the stroller (and even then not many times). Seriously. When my two older kids were around 1o or 11, I took them to the mall and it was like country come to town. They were fascinated by the mannequins. They were so wide eyed and in awe and pointing to everything that it was almost embarrassing. They never went to camp until 5th grade. The idea of what Reve' did, which every mother did at the time, resulting in the horror that occurred to her son was enough for me to be way overprotective. I make no apologies for it though and they all seem to have turned out just fine. I had to pray a lot to get over being so afraid and I have gotten much better over the years.
John Walsh wrote a book, "Tears of Rage: From Grieving Father to Crusader For Justice The Untold Story of the Adam Walsh Case." I saw it at my library and sat down to read it. I was captivated, pouring over the horror and grief that John and his wife experienced. But then, at the end of the book, John publishes the letter written to him from the killer of his son. I cannot fully describe in words the macabre and sick twisted words that I read that day. I only remember being overwhelmed with the aura of evil. I just don't know how else to describe my feeling. The room spun and I had to put my head down on the table in front of me. Someone asked me if I was ok, and I couldn't respond. The evil there was so pervasive I could feel it around me. I know it sounds strange. It felt strange. In a moment it was over and I closed the book and cried. Just kept my head down and cried as quietly as I could.
No parent should ever have to go through what the Walsh family went through. In the NRO article Anne points out some very real causes of this kind of horror. She wonders, as I do, why we allow so much in our society that leads to this.
"We have become so accustomed to terrible things happening to kids that we tend to forget that we diidn't always live in such fear. Until recently, we didn't have child-sex tourism, child prostitution, and pedophiles soliciting our kids online. A few years ago, we would not have accepted a television show like Law and Order: Special Victims Unit, which regularly chronicles, for our viewing pleasure, stories about the torture, rape, and murder of America's children."
Regarding the new law, Ann says this: (emphasis mine)
"This law is a huge leap forward. But unfortunately, it only goes after predators after they have victimized a child. We also need to go after the people who inspire these crimes: pornographers.
According to the National Coalition Against Pornography, no single characteristic of pedophilia is more pervasive than the obsession with child pornography. The vast majority of child molesters admit to the regular use of hard-core porn, and one study found that states with the highest consumption of pornography also have the highest rape rates. "Not everyone who reads porn acts out [against children], but everyone who acts out does read child pornography," Roben Rodriguez of the International Center for Mission and Exploited Children told USA Today.
Porn is a $10-billion-a-year industry, much of it related to organized crime. Some 800 million adult videos and DVDs are rented every month-- many to people who live near our homes.
Why do we put up with this? Why do we put up with porn on the candy aisle of the grocery store, Internet portals that allow child-porn clubs on their websites, and cable contracts that force us to subscribe to sleaze if we want Sesame Street?
You'd think parents, with Adam Walsh and our own children in mind, would do everything they could to rid the world of the child porn that drives pedophiles to commit crimes against children. Last week's bill-signing is a sobering reminder of how many victims are out there-- and, tragically, how many more victims there are to come."
Tar baby?
I was reading that many black leaders were outraged by Mitt Romney using the term "tar baby" in a speech about the troubled Big Dig project.
BOSTON (AP) -- Gov. Mitt Romney has apologized for referring to the troubled Big Dig construction project as a "tar baby" during a fundraiser with Iowa Republicans, saying he didn't know anyone would be offended by the term some consider a racial epithet.
This is what he said:
"The best thing politically would be to stay as far away from that tar baby as I can," he told a crowd of about 100 supporters in Ames, Iowa."
I remember when Tony Snow said it recently as well. I have, of course, heard of the story of the "doll made of tar that traps Br'er Rabbit. It has come to be known as a way of describing a sticky mess." But I have never heard of it being a derogatory term for black people.
I grew up in Mississippi during the 60's and I heard just about every derogatory remark one can possibly make about a black person and that was never one of them.
So where did the "derogatory" part come from? I'd like to know.

Mel's moronic behavior.
I couldn't let this story go by. I suppose you have heard about Mel Gibson's drunken driving incident where he launched into a Jewish slur tirade.
Appalling.
But I have read on other blogs that Gibson is a hypocrite. Excuse me? Gibson has always been a looney type movie star. I don't know why we expect better behavior. Because he made "The Passion of The Christ?" He is an alcoholic. Obviously still struggling with it. Making a beautiful work of art, even if it is about Christ, does not make one perfect. Christians do not claim to be perfect. The only difference between Christians and non-Christians as far as behavior goes, is the awe we have for the compassion and forgiveness we receive. We should make the effort to lead a more virtuous life and those who are truly Christian do, but that doesn't mean we are all Mother Teresa. This
is not to defend Gibson. He should be ashamed and seems to be by his remarks afterwards:
"I acted like a person completely out of control when I was arrested," he said in a statement issued by his publicist. "I disgraced myself and my family with my behavior and for that I am truly sorry. I have battled with the disease of alcoholism for all of my adult life and profoundly regret my horrific relapse" ... Gibson also apologized Saturday for what he called "my belligerent behavior" when he was taken into custody. "The arresting officer was just doing his job and I feel fortunate that I was apprehended before I caused injury to any other person," he said. "I acted like a person completely out of control when I was arrested and said things that I do not believe to be true and which are despicable."
I read at Captain's Quarters that Abraham Foxman, the director of the Jewish Anti-Defamation League, wants the police to open a criminal probe into Gibson's stupid remarks:
"Calling for a criminal investigation into the Oscar-winning actor and director's remarks, Abraham Foxman, the national director of the US Jewish Anti-Defamation League, said: "We believe there should be consequences to bigots and bigotry."
Now that is just absurd. Bigotry is not criminal. And if it was there are about a dozen people I could think of right off the bat that could be arrested for anti-Christian bigotry. Not to mention racist bigotry on all sides of race in this country. So give me a break there.
I am sickened by Mel Gibson's behavior, but I am certainly not surprised. Hollywood is Hollywood after all.
Update: It seems Andrew Sullivan has linked "this rightwing blog." He says I am "blaming hollywood" for this. Say what??? I think it is quite clear that movie stars are not known for their virtuous behavior. If we aren't reading about rehab or drug addiction or drunk driving, we are reading about their divorces and affairs. I don't think I am blaming anyone but Mel for his behavior. I am just saying I am not surprised that a movie star would do something like this. Just like I am not surprised that Andrew Sullivan would misconstrue what I wrote.
